The Pantie Project

The Pantie Project:
BSQ will be hosting a community service project on Monday, September 27th from 6-9 pm.
Young girls in Duk Payuel, Sudan, are denied an education once they have their period because they have no panties nor sanitary napkins.  This fact was brought to our attention by Joseph Akol Makeer, one of the Lost Boys of Sudan.  Joseph was relocated in Fargo, went to school at NDSU, and wanted to help people from his village.  On a recent trip to Sudan, he discovered that girls are not allowed to go to school once they start menustrating.

Please join us for a night of sewing sanitary pads for these young girls.  According to a letter written by these young girls, "Blook coming out every month is our problem.  Boys laughing us every day and they say that girls blood come out because of abortion.  Boys do not know God make girls to be blooding every month and not boys."  The young girls also wrote, "Young girls marriage young because when you have baby in stomach no blood problem for 9 months until baby is birth.  Blood is bad shame to us."

The pads are easy to make and require only flannel, terry cloth (old towels could be used), and snaps.  The girls wash the pads out and reuse them.
BSQ has donated 20 yards of flannel to be used for making the pads. In addition, BSQ will be offering a discount coupon to be used that evening to each person who brings a new multi pack of panties to donate. In addition we will have some door prizes to give away as well.

This is a great way to use up smaller scraps of flannel and terry cloth.  We will be needing donations of  flannel, terrycloth and snaps so please help any way you can. You can drop off supplies if you can not make the evening event.  Non-sewers are also welcome as we will need people cutting out patterns and applying snaps.
If you would like to help, but can’t make it that evening please stop in and we can give you the pattern and you can sew them at your convenience and drop off.
Please let us know if you are planning on attending.  Just your very basic sewing supplies will be needed  (machine, thread, scissors, and pins).
